Time Management Tips and Techniques

"The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex overwhelming tasks into small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”

         —Mark Twain

Is your To-Do list an out of control monstrosity that grows and grows and grows?

In today’s fast-paced information age—where we’re always connected by smartphones and tablets—the world seems smaller, busier, and even full of too much information at times. So, how do you tame your task list so you can spend more time with family and friends as well as work on projects you enjoy?

Try these Time Management Techniques from the Gurus

Follow these easy steps at home and at work to whittle down your mountain of tasks. After a few weeks of progress, you’ll find you have more time to do what you want to do, not what you have to do.

  1. Plan
    • Write tasks and projects on a sheet of paper, type them into an app, or jot them down on index cards.
    • Identify any due dates, issues, or concerns you have.
    • Break down larger tasks into small chunks that are easy to do in an hour or two.
    • Think ahead about a month.
    • Do your planning the same time every day.
    • Keep your plan with you so you can jot down new tasks when they pop up.
  2. Prioritize
    • A high priority is your must-do tasks.
    • Medium is something you need to do but is not essential.
    • Low priority tasks are things you want to do but could do without.
    • Review and adjust task priorities daily.
  3. Delete
    • Review your task list daily.
    • Delete low priority tasks or tasks that no longer apply.
  4. Delegate
    • Identify tasks that can be done by someone else.
    • Write down the name of that person or company.
    • Delegate the task to them and  keep tabs on the progress.
  5. Do
    • Regularly schedule time to work on your tasks.
    • Minimize multitasking to increase your productivity

Book some alone time, turn off your electronic devices, and close the door so you can concentrate on one thing at a time and check off those tasks one by one!
